| My first attempt to learn Korean dates from August 2009, the 26th to be precise, according to my notebook. My motivation then: curiosity and the desire to learn the script (which I learned in J. David Eisenberg's excellent [[http://langintro.com/kintro/index.htm|Introduction to Korean]]). I used a copy of [[http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/080483976X/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0804820791&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=14SH12414J65P16Z8TJJ|Elementary Korean]], too, which I copied fiercely into my notebook in my usual "learn like there is no tomorrow" mode. I lasted a few weeks before my studies and lack of powerful reasons to learn the language made me forget about Korean. | These collections of words are based on the frequency lists published by the National Korean Language Institute, which can be googled up using the keyword "현대국어사용빈도조사결과파일". | My second and far more successful attempt started on April 2011, the 4th according to my notes. My motivation this time: [[snsd|shall I confess it?]] I don't care about not understanding lyrics, but these girls have what could be called a "body of work" in variety shows and I don't think I've ever feel so frustrated for not understanding a language. No, not a mere "collection" or a "bunch" or "a lot", I'm talking about hundreds of hours of radio and TV appearances which are extremely fun to watch and more often than not interesting and sometimes touching, too. Fortunately, they have an [[http://soshified.com|extremely dedicated team of fansubbers]], but that only makes me want to learn the language more. | What follows is a highly personal and idiosyncratic attempt at classifying these words in order to facilitate their learning. I've tried to discover and respect the patterns that appear naturally in Korean. The classification cuts across categories such as parts of speech, semantics, etymology and phonetics. Thus, you will find sections devoted to, say, native Korean words for mammals, verbs ending in -거리다 (which tend to describe certain types of repetitive actions), words that contain specific hanja (which classify themselves semantically, how nice), etc. |
